If you’re unable to close pending orders on MetaTrader 5, it may be due to a variety of factors. Below are some common causes and corresponding solutions to help you troubleshoot and restore normal trading.

1. Common Causes

  • Insufficient Account Balance or Margin

  • Unstable Network Connection

  • Order Still Pending or Restricted (e.g. limit or stop orders)

  • Order Locked or Modified by Another User

  • Server Outage or Unavailability

  • Market Closed (Outside Trading Hours)

2. Troubleshooting Steps

2.1 Verify Account Balance and Margin

  • If your Balance or Free Margin is insufficient, the platform will decline your close request.

  • Check these figures in the Trade tab or Account History.

2.2 Check Network Connectivity

  • An unstable internet connection can prevent the platform from communicating with the server.

  • Ensure you’re on a reliable network—try reconnecting or switching between Wi-Fi and mobile data.

2.3 Confirm Order Status

  • Pending orders (limit or stop orders) can’t be closed until fully executed.

  • Verify that your order has been filled and isn’t still awaiting execution by the market or platform.

2.4 Review Trading Hours

  • Some instruments only trade during specific sessions. Closing requests outside those hours will fail.

  • Check the instrument’s trading hours in Market Watch or its specifications.

2.5 Check for Hedged Positions

  • Holding simultaneous long and short positions on the same instrument (hedging) may prevent you from closing just one side.

  • Ensure you have no opposing positions blocking partial closures.

2.6 Allow for Execution Delays

  • High volatility or low liquidity can introduce delays.

  • Wait a moment and try again once market conditions stabilise.

3. Practical Solutions

3.1 Manually Close the Order

  1. Open the Trade tab.

  2. Locate the pending order you wish to close.

  3. Right-click the order and select Close Order.

  4. Confirm in the dialog box.

3.2 Use a Market Order to Close

  • If an order is partially filled or delayed, place a market order in the opposite direction via the order window to offset and close your position.

3.3 Contact Your Broker’s Support Team

  • If the issue persists, it may be due to platform faults or technical errors.

  • Provide your account number and order details to your broker’s support team for further assistance.
